College fees coming in by the back door, say students

“Third-level students face a massive hike in registration charges to €1,500 next year as the Government edges closer to the return of college fees. The increase from the current charge of €900 is being used to help to close the shortfall in government funding for higher education, down this year from €1,887m to €1,844m. Finance Minister Brian Lenihan signalled government support for the concept of fees when he said in his speech that Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe was reviewing the contribution students could make to their third-level education. Mr O’Keeffe said he expected to have the report for Government in four to six months …” (more)
