Tuition fees: the need to embrace reality

“On Tuesday morning I took part in a radio discussion on RTE (the Irish state broadcaster) on university tuition fees. These events don’t, I have to say, nowadays throw up anything new. The arguments are well rehearsed and those taking part are not generally there to have their minds changed (probably including me). Today I was debating with a student leader, a respected trade unionist, Senator and teacher, an employers’ representative, and an Opposition politician – and I think we all said what you would have expected us to say.
