A dose of strategy

“Here we go! Well over a year ago the then Minister for Education and Science, Ms Mary Hanafin TD, announced the establishment of a strategic review for higher education. Subsequently there were few visible moves to get this under way, until a recent statement by the new Minister, Mr Batt O’Keeffe. Last Friday (February 6) the Minister finally made the formal announcement, including both the composition of the steering group to oversee the review and its terms of reference. The steering group will be chaired by Dr Colin Hunt, an Irish economist with the Australian firm Macquarie Capital Advisers. Its membership is heavily weighted towards senior civil servants, but it also includes one university head (John Hegarty of Trinity College Dublin) and one head of an Institute of Technology (Marion Coy, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology). Under the terms of reference, the chief objective is to ‘consider the role of Irish higher education in the context of higher education’s role in modern societies and, in particular, in the modern knowledge society’ …” (more)
