‘Students will suffer’ in DIT cuts

“Unions have warned that ‘students will suffer’ after the Dublin Institute of Technology unveiled radical plans to cut costs by €9m. The college has proposed the axing of overtime and allowances and restrictions on recruitment in a bid to bring down costs. A document listing the cost containment measures, seen by the Irish Independent, was recently presented to the governing body of the institute prior to approval by the Higher Education Authority (HEA). The document notes that the budget allocated to DIT this year is around €118m, which includes a HEA grant of €111m and student fees of €7m.
