“The debate on the future of universities in Australia and the Bradley review appears to be hotting up … To someone who has been ‘outside academia’ for a while, the problems with funding seem blindingly obvious. First, the money flow is imbalanced for research universities. Most of the money follows students not research. So top academics and top universities do research because they feel it is important, not because it really helps the university bottom line. In this sense, the government treats basic university research like charity – ‘let’s hope someone does it even though they aren’t paid for it’ …” (more)
