Colleges ‘at war’ over 8pc pay rise for senior staff

“College professors have admitted they don’t want their ‘shameful’ recent salary increases saying ‘we were already overpaid’, the Sunday Independent has learned. Senior dons received an eight per cent rise in their salaries just before Christmas arising from the previous national pay agreement. It brought their salaries to between €123,000 and €159,000 a year. However, lecturers at lower grades received no increase which, caused significant disquiet. Since the increase was agreed by Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe, Irish academia has been rocked by heated email exchanges on campuses including University College Dublin (UCD), University College Cork (UCC) and University of Limerick (UL). With budgets everywhere under severe pressure, and all seven Irish universities facing multi-million euro debts, the wisdom of awarding the professors is being questioned, even by the dons themselves …” (more)
