Fees will send students ‘over the border’

“A re-introduction of tuition fees would lead to a ‘flight of students’ across the border to Northern universities, an Oireachtas committee was told yesterday. Fees would also have a significant and growing detrimental effect on applications to Institutes of Technology in border regions, it heard. The group representing the institutes said applications to Northern Ireland and Britain had gone up 13pc this year to 5,000, and bringing back fees would push that figure higher. It would be cheaper for students to enrol in Northern colleges than in the Republic, said the Institutes of Technology Ireland. At present, fees range from €2,250 for higher certificate equivalent programmes to €3,500 for degree courses in the University of Ulster …” (more)
