“… Over the last few years, Irish universities – with the aid of Enterprise Ireland – have taken significant steps to commercialise their research. Although we started later than US universities, the number of spinouts and licences per research dollar shows Irish and American universities are already on a par. Havok, Iona Technologies and Changing Worlds are examples of successful companies that started in academia, and it can be argued that the system will only improve with the recent funding of the university technology transfer offices by Enterprise Ireland. Here at NUI Maynooth, a recent poll of our academics showed that an overwhelming majority would like to engage further with industry of all sizes to benefit the Irish economy …” (more)
