Academics’ pay is well earned

Ireland“I can understand James O’Sullivan’s position regarding the allegedly high salaries of Irish academics relative to those in Germany, and the reluctance people might have to pay college fees that might fund these salaries (Letters, March 23). However, these salaries have to be considered in the Irish context, particularly the kind of example that business and government sets, with members of the business community grabbing million euro bonuses, and politicians grasping ridiculously high pay and vast expenses. In this regard, the salaries of two very highly qualified senior UCC academics were published in my local newspaper last week. Both salaries combined still only came to roughly the same as what Brian Lenihan has decided is a reasonable salary for a banker …” (more)
