Demand for college places surges to record levels as jobs market tightens

Ireland“Demand for college places has been pushed to a record level by the recession, with 75,000 people applying for spots in September. The Central Applications Office (CAO), the facility for processing applications for third level, has been flooded with a late rush of interest. While February 1 is the standard cut-off date for the CAO, applications are accepted up to May 1. According to provisional CAO figures, about 5,961 late applications were made up to May 1, a 50pc increase on the same period in 2008, and double the more typical figure of around 3,000 …” (more)
