Greens deny any U-turn on third-level fees issue

Ireland“The Green Party last night denied it has done a U-turn on third-level fees ahead of a major conference with its ousted councillors and anxious supporters. The party stands accused of abandoning its hard-line opposition to college fees after Energy Minister Eamon Ryan claimed he would be ‘comfortable’ with a fees system once it does not discourage people from going to college. But, in a move to clarify the party’s stance amid increasing criticism and growing pressure from the Labour Party, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and its own grassroots, a spokesman last night insisted the party remains opposed to the re-introduction of fees …” (more)
