    These stories reflect a wider reality. The number of academics in the universities fell by 12% between 2008-2012. At the same time, the number of Research and Specialist NON- ACADEMICs rose by 188% (HEA. 2013).

    These figures suggest that academics are beginning to be displaced as the heart of the university. A very worrying development.
