Universities eye more Irish students to replace overseas losses

“Universities want extra Irish student places to be funded by the Government in the coming academic year to replace a sharp drop in the number of international students. The Irish Universities Association is seeking a €230 million stability fund which it says could provide additional student places in access programmes for those from under-represented backgrounds, as well as improved grants and wellbeing supports …” (more)

‘Plan B’ for Leaving Cert exams under active consideration

“A contingency plan for awarding grades to Leaving Certificate students in the event that summer exams are cancelled is being actively examined by senior officials, according to well-placed sources. Universities ask Government to open more places for Irish students to cover Covid-19 losses

“Universities are asking the Government to open more places for Irish students in the autumn to help cover their Covid-19 losses. The cost of the pandemic to the seven Irish traditional universities will run to €374m over 2020 and 2021, according to an initial assessment. The biggest chunk of that is an estimated €181m in lost fee income from international students …” (more)

Surge in applications for student grants

“Record numbers of students are expected to apply for grants in the coming academic year due to the volume of families affected by unemployment or reduced incomes. Student Universal Support Ireland (Susi) recorded a surge of 10,000 grant applications within a single day of opening its applications for the coming academic year …” (more)
