Leiden Ranking

“The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2016 offers key insights into the scientific performance over 800 major universities worldwide. A sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators provide statistics on the scientific impact of universities and on universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration.” (more). Data is here.

The ranking has been modified somewhat with new editions, both in methodology and in a steady increase in the number of institutions ranked. The ranking was calculated before 2016 on both a size-independent and a size-dependent basis (size-dependent ranking is shown in brackets):

NUIG  596 261 (465) 205 (325)

 DCU  815  –  –  –

The ranking is based on the Web of Science database, and so while it now purports to cover all fields of “science”, the hard sciences are much better served than the humanities. The 2012/2013 rankings distinguish between 5 different areas (size-independent rankings):

 Trinity  UCC  UCD
 Biomedical and health sciences  36  119  243
 Life and earth sciences 165  148  253
 Mathematics and computer science  73  358  187
 Natural sciences and engineering  48  241  255
 Social sciences and humanities  113  –  284

In 2014, “instead of five fields the ranking now offers seven, and these fields have been defined at the level of individual publications rather than at the journal level”. Size-independent rankings for Irish institutions:

Trinity UCC NUIG UCD
Cognitive sciences 58 143 135 274
Earth and environmental sciences 299 226 401
Life sciences 94 145 252 195
Maths, computer science and engineering 211 450 36 163
Medical sciences 87 119 199 185
Natural sciences 73 138 217 331
Social sciences 170 325 377

In 2015 they reverted to a 5-field system (size-independent rankings shown):

Trinity UCC NUIG UCD
Biomedical and health sciences  84  121  173  186
Life and earth sciences  113  159  276  235
Mathematics and computer science  196  221  267  409
Physical sciences and engineering  118  318  140  231
Social sciences and humanities  192  319  398  385

The 2016 analysis was more detailed, and does not lend itself to rankings. See here.
