“There is a report in today’s Irish Times that the government is considering a significant increase in the annual registration charge paid by students, and that this would mean that tuition fees would not be reintroduced (or possibly, not yet). The Times states that it got this information from ’senior political sources’: in other words, a leak. When the presidents met the Minister for Education and Science a few days ago, this way of dealing with the funding issues facing us was not mentioned at all. Furthermore, when the government last raised the registration charge (without consulting the universities, as it should be doing), it also clawed back the resulting income by deducting it from the recurrent grant.
