But as the recession deepens, more and more students are finding it difficult or even impossible to pay for school – and higher education is becoming more a preserve of the haves in US society than it has been in several generations. Some are forced to scramble for alternative sources of income–in the form of extra jobs, scholarships or loans. Others, finding themselves caught in the ‘credit crunch’ and suddenly deemed by banks to be an unacceptable risk, are being cut off from student loans.
