“Demand for a place in college next autumn is at record levels. Increasing numbers of Irish students want to pursue a third-level qualification – both at home and in the UK. Latest figures from the CAO show a 6pc rise in interest for university and other third-level institutions. The deadline for CAO applications was February 1, and the most updated data shows the number has reached 67,642. That’s up 3,774 on the equivalent 2008 figure of 63,868, and compares with 61,961 at the same time in 2007.
