“A Northern Ireland woman led her team to victory in University Challenge — despite being a student at another college at the time, it emerged last night. Five years ago Freya McClements, from Londonderry, became only the second woman to captain a winning team in the prestigious BBC2 quiz competition. But although the then 23-year-old led Magdalen College, Oxford, to victory over Gonville and Caius, Cambridge, she was actually studying Anglo Irish literature at Trinity College, Dublin — which, under the show’s own rules, would have made her ineligible to compete.
