Remarks by the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD, at the first meeting of the steering group for the national strategy for higher education in Ireland

“… That we have an international perspective to lend to our deliberations is crucially important. Our international experts combine the advantages of a deep knowledge of higher education systems, their own reform experiences and the impartial eye of the outside observer. Acquisition of and access to knowledge is at the heart of a modern society and economy. The quality of its transmission to students and the facilitation of its discovery form the core of the dual functions of teaching and learning and research in higher education today. I see those functions as being of critical and complementary importance. The third leg – that of our capacity to translate knowledge into commercial potential – also takes on a new and more urgent importance in this time of economic uncertainty …” (more)
