“University departments should expect to replace at least 10% of their senior academics every year to make room for younger researchers, a conference heard. Sir John Beringer, former pro vice-chancellor for research at the University of Bristol, told the Royal Society and Nature magazine conference, Tomorrow’s Giants, that universities put young researchers under enormous pressure by assessing them continually.
