    I didn’t get the impression that the UCC President was having a go at Acces students as per the criticism from the 25 named academics. More that he was criticising government policy to widen access to university (by making more courses available) without resourcing them adequately. And I don’t think he ever mentioned ‘Access students’ as being a problem (as this article makes out). In my experience of teaching to very large groups, the brighter, more hardworking students lose out as you begin to teach to the middle.
