College plagiarism probe runs up bill of almost €250,000

“A probe into plagiarism at a third-level college has run up bills of almost €250,000. In April 2011, the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) started an external inquiry into how it dealt with complaints about plagiarism. The incident in question has already been the subject of three internal inquiries …” (more)

  • This is truly gas. A plagiarised story about plagiarism. The real source of this story is the Galway City Tribune which had the story a full 24 hours before the Indo. Pure cheek. “Figures seen by the Irish Independent”. They were seen alright — in the previous day’s Galway City Tribune. The story originates, as anyone who has read the original will be acutely aware, from a Freedom of Information request by the Galway City Tribune to GMIT. Credit where it’s due, they have made the running on this story for over two years now with occasional contributions from the Irish Times. Typical Indo, hijacking other people’s hard work. Brazen cheek, Ms Crawford. Plagiarism, apparently, is not just rife in the Third Level institutions. It appears to be rife in certain sections of the Fourth Estate as well. • Saw that, too. Crikey that’s a hell of a lot of money spent with no outcome. Fair dues to Tribune. They have done exceptional work on this story. Where did Ms Clawford come from so late in the day?

  • Lots of people waiting in trepidation for the outcome of this investigation. Heads will surely roll if the outcome is what the rumour mill in the corridors of GMIT suggest it will be. After all, the investigation is not just into how the student got his hands on the model answers, which ought to have been accessible only to lecturers, but also into the subsequent washing of hands by some very senior people in the college. Word is that the publishers are livid with GMIT for such a serious breach of security. With such a financial outlay involved, the onus is on the investigation to deliver results and provide answers to the questions that have been on everybody’s lips in the School of Business for years now. WHY HAS IT BEEN NECESSARY FOR THE PRESIDENT OF GMIT TO PERSONALLY TAKE OVER THE RUNNING OF THIS SCHOOL? Are there any precedents in Irish third level colleges?

  • Typical of the Independent. I see a lot of the Galway stuff appearing days after the local Tribune. same story word for word almost.

  • An unbelievable amount of money and that`s only up to October. ! Lets hope the final report, whenever it comes, is published. It has to be or else the whole process will have little credibility.

  • Read the Indo and Trib articules, in fairness thats a lot of money. Theres stories online from galwaynews that goes back years on plagiarism at gmit, wonder y its taking do long? not just gmit either, id say it happens in all colleges/schools except they dont ger caught

  • It does Regina. Plagiarism is an issue in every Institute of Technology and University in the country but all have effective procedures for dealing with cheats. In this case however it would appear Management just did not want to know when a lecturer reported an obvious case of plagiarism by a prominent student closely linked to senior staff in the Institute. This investigation is about an alleged cover up by senior management in the Institute. The implications for them and the reputation of the Institute are enormous if this is found to be the case. Well done to the Tribune for exposing such a serious issue. Wonder why the other local media are so slow to cover this story ?

  • You can hardly be referring to the Galway advertizer Regina. That never covers news stories, only press releases and free stuff for people who advertize and really boring old columns. Its so out of touch with whats happening in Galway that its laughable.
